Who Will Benefit from an Estate Planning Review?

Someone Who...

  • Owns or is an active shareholder in a small business corporation or farm
  • Is concerned about paying off debt or replacing family income upon facing a critical illness, disability, or premature death
  • Owns RRSPs or RRIFs valued at $200,000 or more
  • Wants to increase tax-sheltered savings
  • Owns capital property which has appreciated in value (e.g., stocks, real estate, etc.)
  • Has a significant non-registered investment portfolio and could reallocate a portion to an alternative investment with tax-sheltered growth
  • Intends to designate funds in his/her will to an heir and wishes assets to remain in the family (a consideration in second marriages, etc.)
  • Donates funds to a charity or intends to make a charitable bequest in his/her will
  • Has received an inheritance, insurance proceeds, won a lawsuit, lottery or other windfall

You Will Benefit By...

  • Generating additional retirement income
  • Ensuring that your assets pass intact to your heirs
  • Determining how much of your estate will be paid in taxes and how much will be left for your heirs

Ask Yourself...

  • Do you realize that the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency will take half of your RRSP/RRIF in taxes when you and your spouse pass away?
  • As a business owner, what plans have you made to ensure that your company survives your death or retirement?
  • Do you feel you are paying too much income tax on your investment earnings?
